King Street, Boston's main commercial thoroughfare, runs toward the Country Gate in this hand-colored etching, which the engraver Francois Xavier Habermann produced in Augsburg, Germany, probably around 1778. The print was made while the Revolutionary War was still being fought and after British troops had left Boston in 1776, so it shows a city that had recently been occupied. King Street was renamed State Street in 1784, so the print preserves the older name. Its bilingual German and French captions suggest it was meant for a European audience curious about the war in America.
