Faneuil Hall, the brick market building on Dock Square in Boston, is the focus here, shown with the stalls and crowds that filled the square in the early 1800s. The hall was a gift to the town from merchant Peter Faneuil in 1742 and was long known as the "Cradle of Liberty," since colonial patriots met there to protest British policy. Engravings like this one were widely reproduced, so they give a sense of how the building and its market looked to people of the time, though the scene is a printed interpretation rather than a precise record.
