King's Chapel stands on Tremont Street at the corner of School Street, and its granite walls, built in the 1750s, give it a weight that sets it apart from the wooden meetinghouses nearby. This c1904 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely photographing American towns and landmarks for sale as postcards and stereoscopic views. By the time of this picture, the chapel had already stood for roughly 150 years, and it was among the oldest surviving religious buildings in Boston. Notice the chapel's simple, austere lines, which reflect the Georgian style of its colonial origins.
