A crowd fills the street as Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine, arrive at the Odd Volumes Club in Boston for a private luncheon on April 1, 1949. Churchill was then out of office, having led Britain through the Second World War and lost his seat as prime minister in the 1945 election, so his American visits drew large public attention. The Odd Volumes Club is a private Boston society of book lovers, which gives the scene a quieter, more social purpose than the street-side welcome suggests. The photograph captures the postwar fascination with a famous wartime leader.
