Hugh Duffy is the subject here, shown as the center fielder of the Boston Base Ball Club, a title the print's caption promotes with the boast "champion batsman of the world." Duffy was a real star of the 1890s: in 1894 he hit .438 for the Boston team in the National League, a season that still stands as one of the highest batting averages in major league history. Publisher George D. Ide issued the print around 1895, when baseball cards and lithographed player portraits were popular collectibles. Notice that the image is a color halftone, a reproduction process that let printers turn photographs and paintings into inexpensive, mass-produced pictures.
