This color halftone shows Hugh Duffy, the center fielder whose title calls him the champion batsman of the world, a boast that fit his remarkable 1894 season, when he hit above .400 for the Boston club. Boston's team was then one of the strongest in the National League, and the 1890s were a golden age for baseball portraiture, when publishers issued colorful likenesses of star players for fans to collect and display. Printed by Geo. D. Ide of Boston around 1895, the piece reflects the city's enthusiasm for its ballplayers. Duffy later entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
