A lithograph of Union prisoners at Salisbury, North Carolina, the image was drawn from nature by Otto Boetticher and printed by the New York firm Sarony, Major & Knapp in 1863. Salisbury held Union soldiers captured in the war, and by 1863 it was already filling with men who lacked adequate shelter, food, and medical care. Prints like this one, produced in the North during the war, carried images of captured soldiers to a public eager for news from the front. Its value as a document depends on how closely the artist's sketch matched what he saw there.
