Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey, is the setting, and that place gives the print much of its significance. The grounds are often called the birthplace of organized baseball, because the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club played there in the 1840s under rules credited to Alexander Cartwright. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its popular lithographs of American life, presented this championship match as a national event. The print is a useful record of how baseball was already being seen as the country's pastime about twenty years before the first openly professional club took the field.
