Hugh Duffy is the figure here, a Boston center fielder posed as the club's player for the era when the team was still called the Boston Base Ball Club. Duffy spent most of his career in Boston and was one of the best hitters of the 1890s, winning a batting title with a .438 average in 1894, a mark that still stands as the highest single-season average in the modern era. Notice the period uniform and the formal studio setting, which reflect how early team portraits were staged and how players of that time were presented to the public.
