Goodwin & Company of New York, a tobacco firm, printed these player cards for the Boston Base Ball Club, and they were tucked into cigarette packs to stiffen the box and give buyers something to collect. The cards date from the late 1880s, when Boston was one of the strongest teams in the National League. The players appear in posed studio portraits, usually in uniform, which helped fans put faces to names at a time when few saw the athletes in person or in newspaper photographs. Today the cards are among the earliest mass-produced images of professional baseball players.
