Winston Churchill, then out of office in Britain, is caught mid-expression at Boston Garden, where he spoke at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Mid-Century Convocation in 1949. According to the caption, he smiled wryly as he praised Harry Truman's forecasting on the 1948 election, a jab at the many commentators who had expected Truman to lose. The occasion drew attention because Churchill was a former wartime prime minister and a leading Cold War voice, and press photographers working in Boston recorded his visit in detail.
