The swan boats on the lagoon in Boston's Public Garden are the particular focus of this stereograph, a paired-image card of the kind sold to Victorian parlors for viewing through a hand stereoscope. The Public Garden, laid out in the 1830s as the nation's first public botanic garden in an American city, became known for its lagoon, and the swan-shaped pedal boats that glided across it were a popular attraction from the 1870s onward. The card was issued under the copyright of George Barker, a Boston-area photographer who produced many views of the city's parks and streets for this market.
