Wilmington in 1912 was a city of about 87,000 people, and its economy was tied closely to the du Pont Company, whose headquarters and expanding chemical operations shaped jobs and fortunes across Delaware. Factories along the Christiana and Brandywine drew workers from the surrounding countryside and from Europe, and the city's streetcar lines carried them between neighborhoods and plants. Local politics in this era revolved around the business families and the Democratic and Republican organizations that competed for city offices, while churches, fraternal lodges and union halls gave working people their own civic life. A photograph from this year captures a community that was growing quickly and beginning to build the larger downtown and industrial district that residents would recognize for decades.
