Olathe, the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas, was in 1909 a small farm town about 20 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri. Its economy rested on the surrounding fields of corn, wheat, and livestock, with local merchants and grain dealers serving farm families who drove or rode in to the courthouse square on market days and court days. Railroad lines linked the town to the Kansas City market, which made it a practical place for farmers to ship hogs, cattle, and grain. Like many county seats in eastern Kansas, Olathe was a place where civic life centered on the courthouse, churches, schools, and lodges, and where residents would have known the town first as the center of their county government and their commercial trade.
