Emporia, Kansas, in 1909 was the seat of Lyon County, a town on the Neosho River where Santa Fe railroad shops and trains tied local life to the grain and cattle trade of the Flint Hills. The Kansas State Normal School drew young students and teachers, giving the town a schoolroom character. Editor William Allen White's Emporia Gazette had by then carried the town's name well beyond Kansas through his commentary on state politics and reform. Residents knew Emporia for its rail yards, its schools, and its newspaper, and the wide view shows brick commercial blocks and houses spreading across the river valley.
