Cherryvale, Kansas, in 1909 was a small town in Montgomery County, in the southeast corner of the state, where people made their living from the land, from the nearby coal seams, and from the natural gas and oil fields that had drawn workers and investors to the region over the previous two decades. Its fortunes followed the railroads that carried coal, farm goods, and gas-field equipment in and out, and the streets and business blocks of the town reflected a community that had grown quickly on the back of those extractive industries. Residents in 1909 would have known the area as part of a busy mining and energy belt that stretched across the Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma borders, where boomtown energy had settled into steadier work. A panoramic view like this one captured the town at a moment when its buildings, rail connections, and growing population still reflected that early boom.
