Hiawatha, the county seat of Brown County in northeast Kansas, was a farm town in 1909, and its fortunes rose and fell with the surrounding fields of wheat, corn, and livestock. Grain and cattle moved out by rail, so the depot, elevators, and stockyards mattered as much to local businesses as the courthouse and the stores around the square.
