Iola, the seat of Allen County in southeastern Kansas, was a market town of farms, shops, and rail traffic in 1909. Surrounding fields produced corn, wheat, oats, and hay, and cattle and hogs moved through the local stockyards and depots on the rail lines that tied the county to Kansas City and the wider Midwest. The region's natural gas boom of the early 1900s had brought drilling crews, new businesses, and talk of cheap fuel for homes and factories, and it shaped how residents saw their town's future. Iola's courthouse square, churches, and downtown storefronts were the center of county political and social life, where neighbors gathered for court days, church suppers, and holiday celebrations.
