Ottawa, Kansas, sat on the Marais des Cygnes River as the county seat of Franklin County in 1909, a farm trade town whose economy rested on grain, livestock, and the railroads that carried them to market. Rail lines gave local merchants and shippers ready links to Kansas City and beyond, and the courthouse square was the center of county business and political life. Ottawa University, a Baptist college founded in the 1860s, gave the town an educational identity that residents were proud to name when outsiders asked about it. Panoramic views of the town from this period show a community still settling into the rhythms of the early twentieth century, with its streets, churches, and commercial blocks built around the farm economy that surrounded it.
