Independence, Kansas, in 1909 was a county seat in Montgomery County, in the southeastern corner of the state, where the Verdigris River runs through the town. The area's economy rested on the oil, natural gas, and coal fields that had drawn workers and investors to southeast Kansas since the 1890s, and railroad lines carried those products and farm goods to markets farther east. Local residents knew the town as a busy oil and gas center, with its streets, storefronts, and church spires laid out along the river valley. A panoramic view from this period records a community still shaped by the energy boom and by the agricultural trade flowing through its county seat.
