Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1909 was a small industrial city in the state's southeast corner, set along the Verdigris River and tied to the coal and natural gas fields of the surrounding county. Railroads carried coal, clay products, and farm goods out of town, and local manufacturing gave the place a working character that many residents took pride in. Outsiders still knew the town for October 1892, when members of the Dalton Gang were killed in a failed raid on its banks, an episode townspeople often recalled. By 1909 churches, schools, and downtown commercial blocks were expanding, and this panoramic view shows the town as its residents saw it.
