Atchison, Kansas, in 1909 was a river city whose economy still depended on flour milling, grain handling, and the railroads that had taken over much of the freight once carried by boat. Its Catholic institutions gave it an unusual educational reputation in the region. St. Benedict's College, operated by Benedictine monks, and the Benedictine sisters' academy at Mount St. Scholastica drew students from across Kansas and neighboring states. Civic life centered on the courthouse, the churches, and the local newspapers, and residents took pride in their schools and orderly streets. Among the children growing up there that decade was Amelia Earhart, born in Atchison in 1897, who was still a schoolgirl in 1909, years away from the fame she would later earn as an aviator.
