Chanute, in Neosho County in southeast Kansas, was a railroad town in 1909, named for Octave Chanute, the engineer whose work helped shape western rail lines. Its economy rested on the railroads, which made it a stop for freight and passengers, and on the surrounding farms that sent grain and livestock to market. The nearby lead and zinc mines of the Tri-State district drew workers and capital into the region, and the town's stores, churches, and lodges served a population of farmers, rail hands, and miners. Local life in those years revolved around Main Street commerce, civic clubs, and the Neosho River that ran past town. A panoramic view from that period would have shown a community proud of its growth and its place on the rail network.
