Atchison, Kansas, sat on the Missouri River in 1909 and still ran on the river trade and the railroads that had shaped it since the 1850s. Its economy rested on grain, flour milling, and freight moving between the Kansas farm country and the rail and river routes to Kansas City and St. Louis. The city's Catholic institutions, including St. Benedict's College and the Benedictine sisters' school on the bluffs, gave the town a strong educational and religious character that residents took pride in. This bird's-eye view shows a town of church spires, brick business blocks, and tree-lined residential streets stretched along the river bottoms and the rising ground to the west. Amelia Earhart, born there in 1897, was a schoolgirl in Atchison at this time.
