Manchester, Vermont, in 1911 was home to Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, whose Hildene estate on the hills above the village had been built in the early 1900s. Lincoln had served as Secretary of War and later led the Pullman Company, the sleeping-car maker, so his presence gave the village a link to national politics and industry. The Ekwanok Country Club pictured here sat within the same circle of prosperous families who had made Manchester a resort over the previous decades. Residents of the time knew the village partly for that Lincoln connection, which sat alongside its reputation as a mountain retreat.
