Manchester, Vermont, in 1911 was also a working village in Bennington County, where year-round life ran on farming, trades and schooling. The Bennington and Rutland Railroad carried passengers and freight through the valley, tying the village to larger rail lines, while hillside farms supplied milk, hay and apples to local buyers. Burr and Burton Seminary, a private academy founded in 1829, drew students from across the state, giving the village a steady stream of young people from outside. Automobiles were only beginning to reach the mountain roads, which were still mostly dirt, so the country club's members usually arrived by train.
