Equinox House, pictured here in 1911, was the grand summer hotel of Manchester, a village in Bennington County in southwestern Vermont. The Orvis family opened it in the 1850s, and under Franklin Orvis it became one of the best-known resorts in New England, drawing vacationers from New York and Boston for mountain air and trout fishing in the nearby streams. The Orvis name also tied the hotel to the fly-rod business the family ran in the same village, so guests could buy tackle and hear the fishing talk that gave Manchester its reputation. Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, had a summer home called Hildene on the hills above town, adding to the prominence of the summer colony. Village life in 1911 still followed the resort's season, with hotel work and local trade rising and falling with each summer's arrivals.
