Lefferet Pond, photographed in Vermont in 1913, sat in a state whose economy still rested on dairy farming, with herds grazing hillside pastures and sugarhouses boiling maple sap each spring. Vermont was also known for granite from Barre and marble from Proctor, stone shipped by rail to buildings and monuments across the country. Machine-tool works in Springfield and woolen mills in river towns gave the state its industrial character. Many rural towns had lost residents since the Civil War, and the Central Vermont Railway carried milk, lumber, and quarried stone out of the hills. A boat house on a pond like this one points to the growing popularity of summer boating and lakeside outings among local families.
