East Pittsford sits in Rutland County in west-central Vermont, a farming and quarrying district in 1913 where dairy herds, hay, apples, and small mills along the Otter Creek drew local life. The dam here harnessed the creek's fall to power a mill and supply water, the kind of modest hydraulic works that many Vermont villages depended on before electric grids reached their hillsides. Pittsford as a whole was known to Vermonters for its marble and slate, and the nearby Rutland region ran on railroad freight, with the Rutland Railroad carrying dairy, stone, and lumber to markets in Boston and New York. By 1913 the state was still recovering from the decades of out-migration to western cities, and rural towns like this one were watching their young people leave for factory work.
