East Pittsford, in Rutland County, Vermont, was a small farming and mill community in 1913, when this panoramic photograph of its dam on Otter Creek was taken. Dairy farming dominated the surrounding hills, and the creek's falling water had long powered sawmills, gristmills, and other small shops along its banks. Rutland County's larger economy depended on marble quarrying and the railroads that carried stone and farm goods out of the valley, and the Rutland Railroad served the towns nearby. For residents of Pittsford, the dam was a working piece of local infrastructure, controlling the water that kept the mills running and shaping the pond that gave the village part of its character. Its importance to daily life would have been obvious to anyone living there at the time.
