Fairlee, a small town in Orange County on the Connecticut River, was mostly a farming community in 1920, when this view of the lake country above it was made. Dairy farming dominated the surrounding hills, and milk, hay and apples moved out by rail along the river valley, where the Central Vermont line served the town. Lakeside cottages and boarding houses drew summer visitors from Boston and other New England cities, a trade that grew as automobiles made country roads easier to travel. That same year national Prohibition took effect, changing social life in towns like this one, while farm families still measured the seasons by haying, sugaring and the monthly milk check.
