Lake Dunmore, a glacially carved lake in Addison County in the Green Mountains of west-central Vermont, was in 1912 a place where farm families and summer visitors shared the same shoreline. The state's economy still rested largely on dairying, with hill farms supplying milk and butter, while marble, granite, and lumber gave work to men in the quarry and mill towns farther off. Vermont's population had been falling in the countryside for decades as young people moved to mill cities or west, so lakeside resorts and summer cottages offered a small new source of income and visitors. People around the lake in 1912 knew it as a quiet summer retreat reached by rail and road, a place for swimming, boating, and fishing in the warm months.
