Sharon, Vermont, in 1914 was a small farming town in the White River valley of Windsor County, where dairy herds and hay fields filled the flats and worn hill farms climbed the slopes. Many families had left the rocky upland pastures for mill work and cities, so the village depended on its creameries, general stores, and the rail line running up the valley. Outside Vermont the town was best known as the birthplace of Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Latter-day Saints, born there in 1805, and a granite monument marking the site, raised in 1905, drew visiting church members. Local life still ran through town meeting and school district business, the rural New England habits of self-government. In August 1914, news of war in Europe reached the valley by newspaper and telegraph, though it would be some time before it touched the town directly.
