Stowe, Vermont, in 1914 was a farming and dairy town in the Green Mountains, where many families still made their living from hay, cattle, and maple sugaring. Vermont as a whole was losing rural population to cities and to the western states, so towns like Stowe depended on a few outside visitors to keep local business going. Summer boarders arriving by rail and by the Mount Mansfield Electric Railway, which linked the village to the Waterbury rail line, were becoming an important source of income for the hotels and farmhouses that took them in. Residents in the years before the First World War would have known Stowe as a quiet village at the foot of Mount Mansfield, the state's highest peak, whose slopes drew hikers and summer guests.
