South Royalton, Vermont, in 1914 was a small village in the town of Royalton, set along the White River in Windsor County. Its economy rested on dairy and hay farming in the surrounding hills, and the village served as a trading point for milk, lumber, and goods shipped on the Central Vermont Railway, whose line followed the river valley. Residents still remembered the Royalton raid of 1780, when attackers allied with the British burned the town and carried off captives, an event that shaped local memory of the early settlement. Few large factories operated here, so the village grew slowly, and its people's lives followed the seasons of haying, sugaring, and milking. The valley would later be struck by the great flood of November 1927, which damaged the White River towns and set off a long rebuilding.
