Woodstock, Vermont, in 1914 was a small village on the Ottauquechee River, built around a green and supported mainly by dairy and hill farming. Its best-known figure was Frederick Billings, the lawyer and railroad executive whose estate and model farm shaped the village's sense of itself as a place of careful land stewardship. Summer visitors from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia were already a steady part of local life, filling boarding houses and the village inn and giving the streets a seasonal rhythm. Most residents still earned their living from the land, and the nearby railroad and mill villages on the river carried their milk, lumber, and goods to larger markets. The panorama captures a town that was modest in size but deliberately kept its New England character.
