Waterbury, Vermont, in 1914 was a small town in the Winooski River valley of Washington County, where dairy farming, hay, and maple sugaring set the rhythm of the year. The Central Vermont Railway line gave farmers and merchants a link to Montpelier and Burlington, and the town's commerce depended on that rail connection and on the farms around it. Waterbury was also known across the state for the Vermont State Hospital, a large institution on the town's edge that had opened in the 1890s and employed many local residents. That summer, news of war in Europe reached the valley's weekly newspapers, and families in towns like this one followed the early reports closely, even as their daily concerns remained the harvest, the schools, and the church suppers.
