In 1915, St. Johnsbury was the seat of Caledonia County in the hill country of northeastern Vermont, and its streets reflected both its industry and its schools. St. Johnsbury Academy, a private secondary school founded in 1842, drew students from across the region and gave the town a reputation as a place of learning. The Fairbanks Museum of Natural History, opened in 1891 and funded by the Fairbanks family, offered residents exhibits in science and natural history, and many people knew the town for it as much as for its factories. Farms in the surrounding hills supplied dairy and produce to local markets, and Vermonters followed news of the war in Europe in their daily papers, though the United States had not yet entered the fighting.
