West Hartford, Vermont, in 1915 was a small farming town in the Ottauquechee River valley of Windsor County, where dairy farming, sheep, and maple sugaring formed the backbone of local life. The village sat along the river and took its water power from it, supporting small mills and shops that served the surrounding hill farms. Rail service in the wider region, including lines running through nearby Hartford and White River Junction, linked local producers to Boston and other eastern markets. Like many rural Vermont towns of the period, West Hartford was losing population to the cities even as its churches, schools, and grange halls anchored community gatherings. Its residents would have known the town chiefly as a quiet agricultural village in a river valley of New England hill country.
