Stowe, Vermont, in 1914 was a farming town in the Lamoille Valley, where dairy herds, maple sugaring, and timber from the surrounding hills supported most households. Summer visitors from Boston and other cities came up by train and by the Mount Mansfield Electric Railway, which carried guests toward the mountain and its hotels, so the town's seasonal trade was growing alongside its farms. Only a few years earlier, in 1910, the Green Mountain Club had been organized to build and maintain the Long Trail along the spine of the Green Mountains, and Mount Mansfield, the state's highest peak, was central to that effort. In 1914, residents would have known Stowe as a quiet mountain community whose future was tied to both its fields and its visitors, with Europe's war just beginning to dominate the news.
