McIndoe Falls, a village in the town of Barnet in Caledonia County, Vermont, sat on the Passumpsic River near its meeting with the Connecticut in 1915, and this view was made from the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut. The river's falls had long powered sawmills and grist mills, and the surrounding hill farms sent milk, butter, and timber to markets down the valley. Railroads along the Connecticut linked the villages on both banks to larger towns to the south. Residents would have known the place as a quiet mill and farming village, going about church, school, and the work of the seasons even as the war in Europe unsettled the wider country.
