Fort Ethan Allen, on the high ground above the Winooski River in Colchester, Vermont, was a U.S. Army post by 1918, and the country's entry into the First World War had turned it into a place of training and processing for new soldiers. This panoramic photograph records a naturalization ceremony there, when men who had been born abroad took the oath of citizenship before shipping out, a practice that became common across American camps that year. Vermont's economy then rested on granite and marble quarrying, dairy farming, and machine and lumber works, and many of the young men in uniform had come from farm and quarry families in the state or from immigrant communities in Burlington and the surrounding towns. The influenza epidemic that autumn swept through military camps across the country, and by November the armistice had ended the fighting in Europe.
