Fort de Loncin stood on the edge of Liège, Belgium, one of a ring of forts built in the late 1880s to guard the city and the rail lines running into the Meuse valley. Liège was a center of coal mining, metalworking, and arms manufacture, and its foundries had long supplied the Belgian army. In August 1914, German troops pushed through the Liège forts, and at Loncin a powder magazine exploded on 15 August, killing many of the defenders and leaving the fort a shattered ruin. By 1918, Liège had endured four years of German occupation, and the broken concrete at Loncin was a grim reminder of the siege that opened the fighting in Belgium.
