Fort Ethan Allen, the cavalry post near Colchester in Chittenden County, Vermont, was a busy military installation in 1918, when the United States was fighting in Europe. The 310th Cavalry, a National Army regiment made up largely of draftees and newly enlisted men, was training there as the country pushed troops toward the Western Front. Across Vermont that year, the economy still rested on dairy farms, granite and marble quarries, lumber mills, and machine shops, and many young men from those towns were being sent overseas. In the autumn, the influenza pandemic reached the state and closed schools and crowded hospitals, leaving communities to cope with the losses alongside the war.
