In 1911 Manchester, a village in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont, depended heavily on summer visitors, many of them wealthy families from New York, Philadelphia and other eastern cities who arrived by rail to stay at the Equinox House and nearby boarding cottages. The Ekwanok Country Club, founded in the 1890s with a golf course, gave these seasonal residents a place to play, dine and dance through the warm months. Marble quarrying and the fly-fishing tackle business of the Orvis company were also part of the local economy, but the summer colony set much of the village's social calendar. Locals of the period knew Manchester as a fashionable mountain retreat, and the club's golf course, photographed here, stood as a sign of that reputation.
