Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester, Vermont, in 1911 sat on the edge of a working agricultural valley in Bennington County. Dairy herds and hay fields covered much of the surrounding land, and the Battenkill flowed past pastures that supplied milk to creameries and nearby towns. Vermont in these years was losing many of its young men to jobs in western states and larger eastern cities, so mountain villages like this one relied on a mix of farm families, mill hands and the shopkeepers who served them. The club's clubhouse and grounds gave members a place to gather in the warm months, but the village's everyday rhythm still followed the seasons of planting, haying and the first hard frost.
