Ypres, in West Flanders, lay in ruins in 1919, a year after the Armistice ended the First World War on the Western Front. Between 1914 and 1918 the town had been shelled almost to rubble during the repeated battles around the Ypres Salient, and its medieval Cloth Hall and St. Martin's Cathedral had been reduced to broken walls. Before the war Ypres had been a center of Flemish linen and cloth production, and its population of roughly 15,000 had lived around the great market square. In 1919 residents were returning to find their homes gone, while salvage crews, burial parties and the reconstruction commission began the slow work of clearing debris and planning how the town would be rebuilt.
