In 1917, Barre, Vermont, was the center of the American granite trade, and the north end of town was crowded with quarry sheds, polishing mills, and derricks where stone was cut for monuments and public buildings. Much of the labor came from Italian, Scottish, and French Canadian families, many of whom had arrived in the decades after the quarries opened in the 1880s and 1890s. Finished granite left town by rail, and the population had grown quickly around the work, with churches, lodges, and union halls serving the men who worked the sheds. The United States had entered the First World War that spring, and the town's stonecutters were living through a year of national upheaval. Dust from the cutting sheds caused lung disease among stonecutters, a hazard the community knew well.
