Barre, Vermont, in 1917 was known across the country as a granite center, with quarries cut into the hills above town and carving sheds along the valley floor where monument and building stone was dressed and polished. Much of that skilled work fell to stonecutters from Italy, Scotland, and Quebec, whose churches, societies, and languages gave the city a distinctly mixed character. Rail lines carried finished granite to buyers far beyond Vermont, so the trade's fortunes rose and fell with demand for memorials and public buildings. The United States had entered the First World War only weeks before this view was made, and like other New England industrial towns, Barre felt that change through enlistments and war-time production.
