Barre, Vermont, in 1917 was the center of the American granite trade, with quarries in the hills around the city and sheds where stone was cut and polished. Many of the cutters and laborers were immigrants from Italy, Scotland, and other parts of Europe, and their skills shaped the city's neighborhoods, churches, and union halls. The United States entered the First World War that April, and the demand for memorial and monument stone pulled local workers and firms into a wartime economy that stretched across the country. Meadow land on the edge of town was giving way to houses and work yards as the population grew, and residents would have known Barre first as the granite capital of the world.
